Singaporeans — myself included — can’t live without mobile data overseas.
Data allows us to keep in touch with friends and family, and takes us away from the real world. I know right…
Having mobile data also gives one a sense of security when in an unfamiliar place — what if you get lost and need to use Google maps or source for information?
What if you just want that false sense of security?
That being said, there is an overwhelming range of options for overseas mobile data out there.
So, which one should you choose?
Well, here’s a suggestion for those of you who:
- Are looking for a SIM card with data for your travels
- Want to be connected from the get-go upon arrival and skip the hassle of looking for a SIM card overseas
- Are travelling to multiple destinations within Southeast Asia, Australia and/or Taiwan
Introducing the GOMO Travel SIM card.
It costs S$20 and offers 3GB of data for 10 days.
Is it good for multi-destination trips?
If you’re going to more than one destination in the same trip, buying more than one SIM card can result in a slightly higher overall cost.
It is also kind of troublesome to buy and change more than one SIM card.
For the GOMO Travel SIM, it provides data connectivity across these eight destinations; Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand.
It taps on Singtel’s partner telco networks in each country to provide a stable network connection.
Even if you aren’t going to different countries for your holiday, this Travel SIM could still be helpful if you are transiting for a day or two before flying elsewhere.
Nice.
But is it troublesome to buy it?
If you need every detail in your trip planned for, then you would understand the anxiety associated with not being able to find a suitable SIM card upon arriving.
What if you can’t find the shop or get lost? Worse still — what if you need to contact someone even before you even buy a SIM card?
I certainly wouldn’t want that extra stress while I’m supposed to be having a relaxing time.
And so, if you are like me, then you’ll be glad to know that the GOMO Travel SIM is super hassle-free and can be purchased months in advance at various locations in Singapore islandwide.
You can pick up one at your own convenience at 7-Eleven, Singtel shops or even at the airport departure hall (at the Travelex Currency Exchange counters).
Unlike SIMs by overseas telcos, it need not be activated immediately upon purchase. Activation is done within one minute online by keying in your GOMO Travel SIM number, passport number and travel start date at the GOMO website.
So, is it worth it?
It really depends on your budget, data needs and the places you are travelling to.
But if you are looking to get your travel SIM before you go on your trip, the GOMO Travel SIM is a convenient option because it is available at locations islandwide and you’re good to go once you land.
