Investment Guide
Investment Guide for Chinese Panda Coins
The ongoing financial crises is gradually leading many people to
consider investment in hard assets, such as artwork, precious metals, and
numismatic coins. As a result, many people, both in the West and in Asia, are
now entering the Chinese coins market. Below is a basic outline of the Gold and
Silver Chinese Panda coin market.
Panda Coin Overview
Beginning in 1982, the Chinese government began issuing gold bullion
coins depicting the the China national symbol of the Panda Bear. The coins were
sold primarily to foreigners as a way to raise foreign exchange revenue and as a
way to enhance Chinese prestige around the world.
Although initially
intended as a pure bullion coin, the Pandas quickly began to appeal to
collectors worldwide, especially in the US and Germany. The coins feature and
attractive new panda design each year, are available in several sizes of both
gold and silver, and are produced in very limited quantities.
• Gold
panda sizes 1/20, 1/10. 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5oz and 1 kg coins many years (12oz Gold in
earlier years)
• Silver panda sizes: 1, 5 and 1 kg, (1/2 oz and 12 oz in
some years.)
• Most 1oz and fractional coin were issued as BU coins, with
proof coins usually marked with a "P" on the coin.
Why invest in
Panda Coins?
• GST exempted in Singapore from Oct 1st 2012
• A very
large and growing collector market in China and worldwide • Very Low mintages
compared to other national bullion coins
• A market that is not yet mature,
where many rare types of coins are not yet prohibitively expensive
•
Attractive designs that change each year • Chinese legal tender status
•
.999 gold and silver purity • Availability in multiple sizes/denomination to
match collector budgets
• Many interesting varieties to explore and collect.
How to invest in Panda Coin?
The first step is to
Identify Your Collecting Goals!
Before diving into coin collecting of
any type, it is important to evaluate your collecting goals, since this will
help inform what you should buy. There are three main categories on
participants, you may overlap into more than one category, but one may be your
primary interest:
• The Collector
• The Bullion Buyer
• The
Speculator / Investor
The Collector
The collector is
interested in the beauty of the coins, the thrill of the chase to complete a
collection, and the satisfaction and bragging rights achieved from building a
great collection.
For the collector, Pandas provide a bonanza of early
stage opportunity. Mintages of pandas are generally small, and there are many
interesting types and varieties that are just now being discovered. It is still
possible to complete full collections of coins at reasonable prices to fit a
budget when compared to low mintage US coins. If you have sharp eye, you may be
able to be one of the first identify a new/future rarity!
How to
collect:
• Chinese collectors prefer collecting all coins from a single date
(1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1oz from a given year)
• US collectors prefer to
collect all dates of a given size (ex 1/2oz pandas from every date).
•
Certified coins are preferred in the US but almost no one buy in China
Recommendation for Collector:
• Date set - every date of a given
coin size
• Variety date set - every date and variety of a given size
•
Chinese set - all sizes of a given date • 1980's set (1986-1988 Gold) (some
years are not yet expensive)
• 1990s set (some years are considered as the
most scarce)
• 2000's set
• Proofs or Proof sets (Anniversary Set)
The Bullion Buyer
If you are looking to buy gold or
silver bullion at a low premium, you still find it is a good idea to buy Chinese
pandas. While gold Maples, Eagles, and Krugerrands currently sell in a range of
3% to 4% over spot gold, current year pandas are sold at slightly higher premium
over spot. And silver Pandas are sold at higher premium over spot silver than
Maples and Eagles. This is a function of strong collector demand and low mintage
production. These coins are sold-out every year in recent times.
However, most Pandas in previous years trade at very hefty premiums.
20-30% is common and many dates can trade at 2x to 3x multiples of spot. Special
varieties trade even higher. Lowest cost gold "common" dates are 1986-88 and
2010-2012. Many silver pandas other then 2010-12 trade over $100 each. This
indeed is a good investment compare buying bullion only trades over spot no
matter how long you keep.
As a bullion buyer, if you are looking for a
little speculative zest in your portfolio, you may want to consider more pandas
in your portfolio. It is always like that even common dates or most recent years
Pandas perform better than pure bullion like Maples and Eagle. Current year
coins have historically gained 10-30% premium within 1-2 years. However, selling
high-premium pandas requires a little patience. Pandas are usually considered as
a middle to long term investment.
Recommendation for Bullion Buyer:
• 2010 Gold & Silver Panda
• Current year Gold and Silver Panda
The Investor and Speculator
If you are reading this, you are
probably already convinced gold and silver are a good long term way to preserve
and protect wealth, but you may be looking for something a little more
interesting than gold bars, or boring American Eagles and Canadian Maple Leaf.
Chinese gold and silver pandas may have the extra potential you are looking for!
The Chinese coin market is still very young compared the mature,
saturated, and well documented US coin market. While US coins may do well in the
future, most of the best rarities have already been identified and priced into
the stratosphere. It is unlikely you will make 2x or 3x your money on any US
coin in a reasonable time period.
Chinese coins, on the other hand, are
just now being discovered. New varieties of coins are being identified each
year, and new collectors are entering the market daily. The new and growing
Chinese upper and middle class now have the money and the interest to buy their
own national coins, and indeed they are buying heavily with government
encouragement. Over the past 3 years, numerous key panda varieties have more
than doubled in market value. We expect this trend may continue in future.
For the investors, we recommend:
• Proof 5oz and 1kg Gold and Silver
Panda with very low mintage
• Special issue pandas (Proof Coin)
• Years
1990 to 2000 are established as the most scarce
• 2001 to 2006 are showing
speculative potential
• 1982 is the first year and a key date always in
demand
• 83-85 and 89, and 86-90 proof sets also have potential as good
value "sleepers"
• 1986-88 trade closer to bullion but may see out-sized
gains as gold gains momentum.
• Platinum and Palladium coins were issued for
a few years and are scarce.
Why invest in Precious Metals
Precious Metal Protect Your Portfolio Against:
• Inflation & Uncertainty
• Geopolitical Unrest
• Currency
Devaluation
The combination of the sustained low interest rate
environment and the equally sustained volatility of the financial market had
pushed increasing numbers of investor to look at alternative to secure their
wealth and diversify their assets.
Gold has been a store of wealth for
over 4,000 years and can truly be considered a global currency. You can own gold
personally in coin or bar form, you can own common stock of gold mining
companies and you can also buy a position on the commodities exchange.
Of all the various options, it is the reliability of physical precious
metal, the gold/silver bullion or numismatic coin that provided an anchor for
you over the medium to long term if you have neither the time nor the stomach to
manage the vagaries of other market. By investing in gold or silver you own a
real, physical precious metal that can be traded on the open market. Always make
sure your portfolio has at least some portion invested in a market segment that
is performing well while, at the same time, other portions of the portfolio may
not be performing as well or may be under-performing. Gold and silver will
always be a good option for you to diversify your portfolio.
Why invest in Panda Coin?
The market value of both gold and silver panda coins is always higher than
any other bullion coins, not only the Panda Coin issued in early years but also
the Panda Coins issued in recent years.
Panda Coin is the most popular and highly recognized coin. The Panda
was first launched in 1982. This year marks the 30th anniversary for Panda
Coin.
Panda coins can be collected for their rarity or purchased as bullion,
depending on the type of Panda and the mintage. The China Mint provides
something for everyone. This is part of the reason the Panda has been so
popular. Whether you are a serious collector/investor or just a person who
happens to like a certain design, you can find something in the Panda
series.
The design of the Panda depicted on each coin changes each year. The
change is welcomed and embraced by the public. This is a powerful reason why the
Panda has continued to gain strength and attention in its worldwide
circulation.
Panda coins are minted in many different sizes. This accommodates the
people who like large coins while others may prefer small coins. One can
purchase a 1/20 oz Panda all the way up to a 1 kilo gold Panda.
However, the most appealing is the extremely low mintages of these Chinese
Panda coins. As a coin collector, investor or dealer, this played a huge
part for everyone entries into this market. China Mint creates instant rarities
by coins with low mintages, which keeps demand exceeds the supply.
Bullion Gold/Silver Pandas
When first issued, the Panda was only available in gold. The Silver Panda
program started in 1983. Now gold bullion pandas are available in 1oz,1/2oz,
1/4oz, 1/10oz and 1/20oz (5 pieces gold set), while silver bullion pandas are
available only in 1oz. Prior to 1989, Silver Pandas were only minted as
proofs.
The price for Bullion Panda coin is very close to spot price but a bit higher
than other major bullion coin in open market due to above mentioned reasons. It
is known to all that even previous year bullion pandas are sometimes a huge
premium to gold/silver price itself. And it should be noted that depending on a
certain variety, the price could be substantially different.

The first 5 oz gold Panda was minted in 1987. This was only minted in two
years at the start, 1987 and 1988..Starting in 1992, the striking of 5 oz gold
Pandas resumed. This time, the mintages were very small at 99 or less pieces
minted. All of these 5 oz gold Pandas from 1992 – 1996 are very rare and
expensive pieces.

Kilo Gold/Silver Proof Pandas
The gold kilo Panda program began in 1997 with only 58 pieces minted.
Ironically, there were no Gold Kilo Pandas minted in 1998, however, this program
resumed in 1999 and continues today.
From 1999 – 2012, the mintage of these gold Panda kilo coins was increased
from 68 pieces to 500 pieces. And the Kilo Silver Pandas was first launch in
1998 with mintage only 1998 pieces to 4000 pieces in 2010. As the demand
increased, so did the mintage. The progressive increase in mintage is a clear
indication of the demand and popularity of these gold Panda kilo coins.

Anniversary Pandas
In 1991, to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Panda program, a 5 Kilo
Gold Panda was produced. The mintage was only 10 pieces. This was the first
Modern Chinese coin and first Panda to breach the $1,000,000 barrier.
The coin chosen to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Panda program in
2002 was a silver kilo Panda. The mintage was high at 6000 pieces. However, this
coin is not seen nearly as often as many of the other silver Panda kilos with
much lower mintages.
2012 is to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Panda, one of the most
successful Modern Chinese coin programs. Seize the chance to add the 30th
anniversary panda into your collection.
