Samsung Reveals YOUM, The Flexible AMOLED Display

Samsung has filed for a trademark on YOUM with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) marking the first time the flexible AMOLED technology has been given a definite name by the South Korean tech giant.
Yes, YOUM will become the name for Samsung’s bendable AMOLED technology as Samsung has filed for the YOUM trademark with the USPTO, as revealed by postings on the US government agency website. Furthermore, Samsung Mobile Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, has also filed for trademarks on FAMOLED, PAMOLED, TAMOLED and WAMOLED, reports say.
The YOUM name for the new Samsung flexible AMOLED display was first noticed by OLED-Display.net and is currently posted on the Samsung Mobile Display site. However, Samsung’s post is in Korean and other than the name YOUM, little else can be gleaned from the post.
One thing that stands out from the page, however, is Samsung describing their new YOUM display as “Thinner, Lighter + Unbreakable” as compared to traditional LCD displays and OLED displays.
YOUM achieves this feat by apparently foregoing the glass layers of the traditional LCD and OLED displays and instead utilizing a kind of flexible film. We expect this film, which gives YOUM its flexibility, to be thinner and lighter than those glass layers used on traditional display technologies so that is why YOUM is thinner and lighter than traditional displays.
According to OLED-Display.net, Samsung can start mass producing YOUM, the flexible AMOLED display, beginning this second quarter. We’re exciting to see where this technology takes devices.
Maybe the Galaxy Skin isn’t too far off the horizon.
