Indonesia Blocks More than 100 Forex Brokers' Website

The Indonesian government has shown its big regulatory teeth to the Forex industry by blocking a raft of websites of Forex brokers: they cannot be accessed from the country's territory. The move, of which we've learned thanks to a report by the Forex Magnates, concerns more than a 100 websites of both domestic and foreign brokers. Here is the full list:

It's really startling that the Indonesian government has acted so roughly against the over-the-counter Forex, given that it has been reluctant to impose any controls on this type of trading so far. Indeed, the central bank has started to regulate foreign exchange transactions less than three years ago in September 2011. But there have been a few if any restrictions for the online Forex trading. In fact, a wide variety of Forex brokers have made use of the mild investment climate in a country with fast developing economy and growing population.

It's a weird approach from the regulators to first ban the websites without any particular reason officially stated for that and then to introduce the regulations. Obviously, the Indonesian government is adopting an approach that is as rigid as the one of the Capital Markets Board (CMB, or SPK) – the Turkish watchdog, which banned access to 32 Forex broker websites in October 2011 – just a couple of months after taking the reigns over the industry.
Apparently, the Forex situation in Indonesia is getting sour – hopefully the government will come up with some clear regulations that will make it possible for Forex brokers to offer their services in the country.
