Welcome to 2013! Now that the New Year is upon us, this is the season for our New Year’s resolutions to fire into high gear. One resolution that is on a lot of people’s minds is finding a new job – that shiny, new place where you can vault your career to the next step. You don’t have to be a senior-level job seeker to burst into the new year looking for a job. The National Association of Colleges and Employers expects employers to hire 13% more graduates in 2013 than they did in 2012.Regardless of your experience level, here are four ways you can help your job hunt in the New Year:
Education: The journey from discovering an open job to getting hired is a long path. Most job seekers forget that they can heighten their chance of successfully landing a new job by doing some research early on. Read about the current news in your industry. A great tool for that is LinkedIn Today, which I’ve talked extensively about in the past. Also read about the company you’re sending your resume to and find out what they do, what kind of people they typically hire, and what sets them apart from their competition.
Give your resume a summary of you: Your resume will be the first thing a potential employer sees about you and it could also be what keeps you from getting an interview. This usually stems from a generic, disorganized resume. Skip the objective (they know you want a new job) and instead write up an engaging summary of your experience. Give them a reason to be excited about you and not just toss your resume into the pile of rejections.
Gain certification: Many trades have certifications, especially IT. The difference for a hiring manager deciding between you and another candidate may come down to certifications. Make a list of the possible certifications out there for your field and determine if one or more of them could give you an edge in your career field. Take 2013 as the year you can further your education and end up with a certificate to help carry you forward.
Get on LinkedIn: More and more employers and recruiting companies like Modis are utilizing the network of professionals on LinkedIn. With so many eyes of hiring managers looking for the social media site, it’s important for you to have your own presence on LinkedIn. Your LinkedIn profile can be more than just an online resume.
