A programme to grow a stable pool of part-time workers has attracted 70 companies and more than 3,000 workers since it was launched in September last year.

SPRING Singapore, the National Trades Union Congress, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency and manpower services firm TCC Group are working on the initiative, which trains part-timers in retail as well as the food and beverage industry before they are deployed to companies.

The TCC Group said it is on track to meet its target of 100 companies and 5,000 part-time workers by the end of the pilot phase in June this year.

The initiative may also be extended to other industries like manufacturing and hotels.

Nancy Lee, 58, a retiree, has been working as a part-timer in a retail store.

"They teach us about customer service, I think this is very good. From there, I learned a lot," she said, adding that she will consider full-time work after her stint as a part-timer is over.
